Because winter problems don't look dramatic—they look quiet.


The Winter Algae Myth

Most homeowners assume algae only grows in warm summer water.

The reality: algae grows when sanitizer drops and circulation slows. Temperature matters less than you think. A neglected pool at 50°F will turn green just as reliably as a neglected pool at 85°F—it just happens slower, which makes it easier to miss.

Cold water doesn't stop algae. Neglect does.


The 3 Reasons Pools Turn Green in Winter

Circulation Drops Too Low

When pumps run inconsistently, dead spots form. Sanitizer doesn't distribute evenly. Algae gains a foothold in corners, steps, and shaded areas where water sits still.

Water must move—even in winter. Four to six hours of daily runtime is the minimum for most residential pools in cold months.

Chlorine Levels Drift

Cold weather slows chemical consumption, so homeowners assume they can stop testing. But chlorine still depletes—just more gradually. By the time green appears, the imbalance has existed for weeks.

Free chlorine below 1 ppm for an extended period is an open invitation. You won't see the problem until it's visible everywhere.

Debris Builds Up Invisibly

Leaves, dust, pollen, and organic material still enter the pool. Without regular removal, they consume chlorine and feed algae growth.

Winter debris is sneaky. One week of skipped skimming can undo a month of balanced chemistry.


How to Fix a Green Winter Pool

The fix isn't complicated. But it requires patience over panic.

Step 1: Restore Circulation

Run your pump continuously—24 hours if possible—until the water clears. Dead water can't be treated effectively. Circulation comes first.

Step 2: Rebalance pH Before Shocking

Chlorine works best in a specific pH range. If your pH is above 7.8, your sanitizer loses effectiveness no matter how much you add.

Test first. Bring pH to 7.2–7.4 before adjusting chlorine. This step alone makes everything else work faster.

Step 3: Raise Free Chlorine (Controlled, Not Panic)

Target 10–12 ppm free chlorine for active algae treatment. This is higher than maintenance levels but lower than the "dump the whole bucket" approach that wastes chemicals and stresses your pool.

Use liquid chlorine or cal-hypo for fastest results. Add in the evening to reduce UV loss.

Step 4: Brush and Remove the Source

Algae clings to surfaces. Brushing breaks it loose so sanitizer can reach it and the filter can capture it.

Brush walls, steps, and corners. Skim debris. Clean skimmer and pump baskets. You're removing what's feeding the problem.

Step 5: Filter Continuously and Backwash as Needed

Let the filter run until the water clears—often 24–72 hours depending on severity. Check filter pressure and backwash or clean when it rises 8–10 psi above baseline.

Don't rush this step. The filter does the heavy lifting.


What This Looks Like in Practice

A homeowner in Georgia cut pump runtime to two hours a day in December to save on electricity. Testing dropped to once a month. By mid-January, the pool had a faint green tint. By early February, it was opaque.

The fix took four days: continuous circulation, pH correction from 7.9 to 7.3, chlorine raised to 12 ppm, daily brushing, and two filter cleanings. Total chemical cost was around $60. The frustration cost was higher.

The following winter, same pool: six hours daily runtime, weekly testing, skimmer baskets emptied twice a week. Result—clear water straight through to spring.

The difference wasn't more work. It was consistent work.

Winter algae isn't mysterious. It's predictable.

It starts with inconsistent habits, builds quietly over weeks, and becomes visible only after the problem is entrenched. The fix is straightforward. The prevention is even simpler.

Green water isn't a failure. It's a signal. Respond calmly, follow the steps, and it clears.
